Volume flow: are buyers or sellers in control?

Lesson 1/3~6 min
Preparing the chart…

Volume flow separates how much trading happened on rising candles and how much on falling ones to measure buying and selling pressure; if price and pressure diverge, the move may be tiring.

Classic volume only tells you ‘how much was traded’. Volume flow goes one step further: it separates how much of that trading happened at moments when buyers dominated and how much when sellers dominated. The difference between the two is called ‘delta’. If delta is positive, buying pressure has outweighed selling recently; if it is negative, selling pressure has.

In the chart above you see a grey line over price: this is an average weighted by delta; it gives more weight to prices where buying pressure was heavy. The line in the lower panel is volume relative to its average. If there is a coloured, sloping line over price, it is a delta divergence: price is making a new high (or low) while buying (or selling) power is not moving the same way. A red line means ‘price is rising but buyers are fading’, a green line ‘price is falling but sellers are fading’.

This resembles an RSI divergence, but it measures money rather than speed. If the force carrying price up is weakening, the fuel behind the advance may be running low. The evidence card also writes, as a percentage, whether buyers or sellers have dominated recently.

One thing not to forget: volume flow is only as strong as the volume data itself. For some BIST data sources volume can arrive as zero for licensing reasons; in that case volume flow is not calculated and the system does not draw it.

The most useful way to use volume flow is to combine it with a level. If selling pressure fades as price falls into an important support, sellers may be getting tired at that level. If buying pressure strengthens as price pushes against resistance, there may be real demand behind the breakout.

How to read it

  1. Look at the pressure percentage on the evidence card: above 55 percent means buyers dominate, below 45 percent sellers.
  2. Look for delta divergence: if the line is red while price makes a new high, the buying power behind the advance may be weakening.
  3. Combine pressure with the price level: rising buying pressure at a support is a hint that the support is being defended.
  4. Do not make it a signal on its own: volume flow gives context; the decision comes from price itself, the levels and the risk plan together.

Trap

The most common mistake is reading every high-volume rise as ‘money flowing in’. Every purchase has a sale on the other side; volume flow only estimates which side is acting more eagerly. The second mistake is treating a divergence as an immediate reversal: an advance with fading buying power can continue slowly for a long time before it turns.

Tip

When you tap the layer saying ‘Buyers dominant’ or ‘Sellers dominant’ on the analysis card, you see the pressure percentage and how delta has changed recently.

Glossary

Delta
The difference between buying-weighted and selling-weighted volume.
Delta divergence
Delta not moving the same way while price makes a new high or low.
Chaikin money flow (CMF)
An indicator weighting where the close sits in the candle's range by volume, measuring money flowing in and out.

Mini quiz

  1. What does a positive delta tell you?
  2. If delta falls back while price makes a new high, what should you think?
  3. What should be done about volume flow for a BIST stock whose volume data arrives as zero?
